So Much For Mideast Democracy

Hamas won a majority of seats in the Palestinian Parliament yesterday. Though the vote was more against the Fatah party's long history of complacency and corruption at the expense of the Palestinian people than for the Hamas party's militant Islamism, the facts that Hamas has a armed military wing and has repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel mean that the Jewish state will have to deal with these people in a new Palestinian government, and that Mahmood Abbas, the Palestinian Authority's Fatah president will have little leverage with the Hamas leadership.
Well, Bush asked for democracy in the Arab world, and he got it. And the people have spoken, in Iraq, Kuwait, and now the Palestinian territories - and they all yelled Allahu akbar. So, how do you like democracy in the Middle East so far, Mr. Bush? :-O
