Barack Obama's handling of the race issue in his speech today was masterful. Not only did he refuse to pretend he could dissociate himself from the Reverend Jeremiah Wright - though he did disavow Wright's comments - he also lent a sympathetic ear to the concerns of white people about affirmative action and crime without condoning racially motivated tendencies that accompany them, and he even cited his white grandmother's fear of black men to show he had nothing to hide about racism in his own family. But, Obama made it clear, whatever color we are, we have to get beyond such issues, even if it's not going to happen overnight.
Not a step that will settle this issue once and for all, but a positive one nonetheless.
Meanwhile, the Bush administration pumped lots of emergency money into the investment banking sector via the Federal Reserve, hoping to avert the worst possible outcome of the latest stock market fibrillations - a severe recession. I'm rooting for this plan, because if it works, the economy could pick up by the fall and then maybe I'll have a job by then. Yes, it's come to this, I'm actually rooting for George Walker Bush out of self-interest! :-O
I feel sick.
