The Impermanence of TV News

It amazes me how anything with a sense of permanence can vanish so quickly. The national broadcast television news establishment is no exception. Two years ago this time, Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, and Peter Jennings were still going strong in their anchor duties in the news departments of their respective networks. Rather has since been forced out over a scandal involving a flawed story regarding George W. Bush's military service, Brokaw retired last November, and Peter Jennings just died of lung cancer yesterday. (RIP. :-( )
In another bizarre turn of events, only NBC's news department was ready with a permanent (I use that word gingerly) replacement upon the vacancy of the anchor position - Brian Williams had already been tapped to succeed Brokaw - yet, the rest of the network is in disarray amidst low ratings and bad choices for new shows. Such is the rhythm of life . . ..
