Violent Iraqi Democracy

So why haven't I commented on Sunday's upcoming elections in Iraq? Simple - the runup to the vote speaks for itself. :-(
The elections are for slates of candidates to form a national assembly to draw up a permanent constitution. Hundreds of parties and coalitions are competing, meaning the elections would be a mess even without the violence. I'm sure Paul Bremer secretly regrets not staring with local municipal elections, which was attempted and almost immediately abandoned thereafter, and working upward to elections for provincial authorities and, finally, the national government; it probably would have been a whole lot smoother. Too bad.
