Say It Ain't So, Johann!

I tuned my car radio to my favorite public radio station today, and a sports show happened to be on. The topic was, of all things, betting scandals involving European soccer games, in which referees helped to fix games. While sporadic throughout Europe, it has been greatly concentrated in Germany, which, ironically, is slated to host the World Cup next year. One incident involved a referee who accepted a bribe of 50,000 euros ($65,000) to ensure that one German team won over another, and it was suggested that he stood to profit by it even more by betting on the preordained outcome.
Fortunately, the German authorities seem to have brought it under control, but betting on soccer remains big business in the Old Country, and it's going to take a lot of effort to keep it clean. :-(
