Three municipalities between two counties in New Jersey, Union and my home county of Essex, experienced a tornado yesterday morning. It caused a good deal of destruction in a five-mile path fifty yards across, along with numerous blackouts, in New Providence and Berkeley Heights in Union County and Millburn in Essex County, and it would have done a number on my mother's home city of Orange if it hadn't dissipated.
What the f---'s going on here? First an October snowstorm, than a hurricane, maybe another hurricane later this year, and now this? New Jersey is getting the sort of weather commonly seen either elsewhere or in different seasons! Something obviously has to be done about climate change, because I'm seeing it right now! The thunderstorm that produced the tornado dumped some hard rain on my town. It was so dark out because of it that when I woke up at 9:30 AM it looked like 9:30 PM outside!
The renowned minister Alfred C. Sharpton (I'm showing him respect here) says that change always starts from the bottom up, never the top down. Actually, some of this climate change has started from the top down - greedy businessmen at the top played a big role in starting it, then got the rest of us down the ladder to contribute to it, like getting us to use our cars far too often. But a change in governmental - especially congressional - action on climate change can start from the bottom up if we the people start demonstrating for such action.
Yeah, it's a boring topic, but as noted environmental expert Paul McCartney once said, if we don't get boring, we're going to get dead.
