The progressive moment looks like a spent force these days. Back in 2006, when the Democrats won control of both houses of Congress in the waning days of the George Walker Bush Presidency, it looked like the right-wing era in American politics was coming to a close. Now it looks like the reactionaries have taken over almost everything, with only the Senate and the Presidency left to fall. The right has put the brakes on so many progressive policies and killed others outright. The war on women? The women are losing, despite Wendy Davis. Despite the Supreme Court's decision to gut the Defense of Marriage Act, same-sex marriage remains illegal in 37 states. The Court also gutted the Voting Rights Act, paving the way for stolen elections and more voter suppression. And in a recent Court ruling you didn't know about, a crime suspect's silence can be inferred as guilt when he hasn't been read his rights yet! (The mainstream media reserved the right to remain silent rather than tell you about it.)
With the right-wing forces of darkness crushing the last vestiges of decency and liberty in These States, it looks like we progressives have lost the struggle, never to fight again. It seems like we ought to give up. Some people already have. But we gotta do better. We have to find another way to fight back.
