One of the more joyous occasions of the year so far was the Diamond Jubilee celebration for Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, in which the British celebrated her sixty years on the British throne. The British people are especially grateful to the Queen for her devotion to her duties as a constitutional monarch, and she does indeed have an impressive record of issuing royal assents, dissolving Parliament when necessary to call elections, christening ships, following the advice and consent of her prime ministers . . .
Alright, I give up - what does the Queen actually do?
Oh, well, she's a nice lady, isn't she? She's like a grandmother to the British, and they love the old gal, enough to have a good old-fashioned flotilla on the Thames in her honor. Not to mention the concert performances given by such huge British pop stars as Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Elton John, and . . . Stevie Wonder?? What a minute? Stevie's an American! What the heck was he doing there?
Anyway, a lot of people in the United Kingdom enjoyed themselves during the festivities, and when I saw footage of the people paying tribute to Her Majesty, there wasn't a dry eye among them. My British friend Therisa even said on her Facebook page that the Diamond Jubilee made her proud to be British.
And given the antics of the folks running our republic and the states that comprise it, she has much more of a right to be a proud Briton than I have to be a proud American.
Hmmm, I think that may explain Stevie Wonder's appearance at the jubilee concert . . ..
