My home newspaper is in trouble.
The Star-Ledger, New Jersey's largest daily paper, has been cutting staff and consolidating features and sections in an attempt to stave off the possibility of being sold or folding altogether. Buyouts have been offered to two hundred employees, and if not enough of them accept them by October 1, the paper could be in trouble.
The problem is simple: Too many people are going to Internet sources, including blogs, for news.
As a blogger, I'm appalled by the growing power of the Internet for news dissemination. I should be happy, but I've never considered this blog to be a legitimate news source, and I've never pretended that it is. I also hate the idea of having to log on to a personal computer every time you want to find out what happened in the world.
The computer isn't a reliable source. Then again, neither is TV news.
Save our newspapers now. Buy one and read one. And do the crossword puzzle.
