The Republicans and the Democrats in Congress had one major purpose before adjourning for their spring recess: pass an immigration reform bill that would provide more border enforcement and give undocumented immigrants a fair shake. The Senate came very close to a bipartisan deal, but Republican senators derailed it by adding amendments that might have been added in reconciling the Senate bill with the House version, and Democrats derailed it by blocking a vote on the amendments. Most Americans want immigration reform that will secure our borders and at least make an attempt to regulate the flow of immigrants - mainly from Mexico - without the problem getting too much out of hand, but Republicans kowtowing to xenophobic voters and Democrats kowtowing to Hispanic activists muddied up the waters. Proof that if you want something done right, don't go to Washington.
