Due to a slight slowdown of the earth's rotation caused by the gravitational pull of the moon, the past solar year was one second longer than it should be. So, the keep the calendar accurate, a "leap second" was added to 2005 at 6:59 P.M. New York time (just before midnight in Greenwich, England).
Eventually, at the rate it takes the earth another extra second to revolve around the sun, a few minutes will be added to a day in a few million years, though it will take hundreds of millions of years to add a whole twenty-fifth hour to a day. And if there's any other useless information I can provide . . .
