George W. Bush apparently tried to improve his image among black people by giving Muhammad Ali the Presidential Medal of Freedom last week. It seems appropriate that one draft evader gave a medal to another - until you realize that the recipient of said medal avoided military service legitimately by taking his case all the way to the Supreme Court, while the guy who gave the medal to him got out of going to Vietnam by calling Dad. And furthermore, Ali resisted the draft because he was morally opposed to the war in Southeast Asia and felt he had nothing to gain from fighting in it.
Bush - who supported the Vietnam War - chose to join the Air Guard to protect Texas from a Viet Cong invasion. Er, the only Vietnamese to invade Texas were shrimp fishermen.
