As of earlier today, Tropical Storm Delta, having formed in the central Atlantic late last week, was threatening the Canary Islands and the Portuguese island of Madeira with heavy rains and winds. This is the twenty-fifth storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, setting a new record and causing serious questions about global warming and whether we're feeling the effects sooner rather than later.
To those who are relieved that the season ends this Wednesday, bear this in mind: It's snowed in New York in April, so a December hurricane is not out of the question. We could run out of Greek letters before this season is all over. The Cyrillic alphabet, anyone?
