Molly Ivins, the feisty liberal columnist and one of the most vocal critics of George Walker Bush and other stupid white men, died of breast cancer. What a downer. I'll miss her pungent, acidly accurate diatribes against the far right and her witty dismissals of hypocrisy and political chicanery. Not to mention her writing style, which I hopelessly tired to emulate in the previous sentence.
Right after Bush was elected to a second term, Molly Ivins lamented how infuriating it was that the worst of his administration was yet to come. That may still be true, given the possibility of a war with Iran. It's even more infuriating to know that Molly Ivins won't be able to comment on the final two years of the age of W - and won't be around to see how it all ends.
This comes only a few days after the death of Art Buchwald, who at his best summed up American politics with light, warm humor and genuine intelligence. It's amazing how many of my favorite columnists have died or retired in the past eight years or so.
On the other hand, Cal Thomas - rabid Bush supporter, former vice president of Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority, and all-around idiot - won't retire and go fishing.
