Senator Timothy Johnson, the South Dakota Democrat, is recovering nicely from emergency brain surgery, putting to rest - for now, anyway - that Republicans might take over the Senate in January on account of Johnson dying or resigning, South Dakota's Republican governor appointing another Republican to replace him, and the Senate being split 50 to 50 with the G.O.P. controlling the upper house through Vice President Dick Cheney's deciding vote. We are all praying for the health of Senator Johnson . . . and if the Republicans should somehow win control of the Senate and thus control hearings on Supreme Court nominees, start praying for the health of Justice John Paul Stevens (81 years old now!).
