Stop me if this sounds like a Bee Gees song.
John Kerry started a joke about George W. Bush's intelligence by saying that his lack of intelligence and his inability to work and study in school got us stuck in Iraq, but by wording it in the universal second person, made it sound like he was attacking the intelligence of our military. This started the whole Republican party demanding an apology, and it started the whole Democratic party reeling and being unable to get its message out, helping Republicans. If only John Kerry had seen that the joke was on him.
Anyway, Kerry apologized for unintentionally offending any members of the military with his "joke," explaining it had been misinterpreted, after refusing to apologize. This may or may not have an effect on Tuesday's voting, but it's already had an impact on Kerry's political career. Not only are his presidential ambitions finished for good, he may even have to forget about running for a fifth term in the Senate in 2008.
