Ann Richards, the governor of Texas from 1991 to 1995, died yesterday of cancer at 73. She will be missed. She used her time in office to open Texas politics up to more women and people of color in an effort to bring more people into the political process. . . except that a lot of what she did was canceled out by her successor, George Walker Bush, who now occupies the White House. :-( Alas, they don't make them like Mrs. Richards anymore. As Molly Ivins said when she left the governor's mansion, sic transit gloria Annie.
