I went ahead and watched the U.S./Italy World Cup match, and I'm glad I did. It was a spirited, aggressively played match, and the Americans held their own against the mighty Italian team, playing to a 1-1 tie. Thanks to an upset by Ghana over the Czech Republic earlier today in Group E play, the United States is still in contention for moving to the next round. And they earned the respect of an opponent that found them tougher than expected. But can the United States break the curse of never having won a Cup game in Europe and advance further?
Oh, well, just the fact that the United States men's soccer team is playing in its fifth straight World Cup tournament is an accomplishment. Prior to 1990, they hadn't qualified for the World Cup since Harry Truman was president.
