So I'm watching today's World Cup game between Italy and Australia, and despite the fact that the game is solidly played, with some brief moments of genuine excitement, it's scoreless all the way through. I start to turn into the classic ugly American, frustrated by the lack of scoring and bored to tears by the state of play as the second half draws to a close. Oh no, I think, not an interminable overtime to determine who advances out of the round of sixteen! Heck, even the fans in the stadium are restless. Then in stoppage time, an Australian player commits a stupendously dumb foul in trying to block a kick from Italy near the Aussie net. Italy gets a penalty kick. It's up. . .and into the net! Italy wins at the last minute, one to nothing, and the Aussies go home. And the crowd goes wild. . . literally. Just when you think you've seen everything, along comes a play like that to remind me why I love this game. :-)
