George W. Bush today named as his White House press secretary the only man who could possibly be more execrable than Scott McClellan. Bush chose Tony Snow, a leading conservative columnist and an anchor on Fox News. How incredibly partisan is the choice of Snow to be the new White House spokesman? Let's examine the evidence:
Snow has his own radio show, and he's been an occasional fill-in host for Rush Limbaugh.
Snow was a columnist for the Detroit News, and he undistinguished himself by crossing the picket line during a strike against the paper, demonstrating his hostility toward organized labor.
Because of his affiliation with a Detroit paper, Snow is a rabid supporter of an autocentric transportation system and dismisses investments in public transportation as an attack on freedom of mobility. "We like to go where we want, when we want," Snow wrote in 1997. "Voters made that clear." Snow has also indicated he wants a place at the table in White House staff discussions on policy in his new job.
Oh yeah, he was a speechwriter for Bush's dad during the old man's Presidency.
If you thought Chris Matthews plays hardball, wait'll you get a load of Tony!
True, the Snowman has an independent streak, having disagreed with the President as a commentator in recent months. But his devotion to the conservative cause, coupled with his new role as a White House shill, means that the White House press corps can look forward to many "Snow jobs" from this administration. :-O
