The Lady From Brooklyn

PBS aired a very inspiring documentary last night about the recently departed Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to be elected to the House of Representatives and also the first black woman to run for President of the United States (in 1972). The Brooklyn congresswoman battled adversity and prejudice not just in her presidential campaign, but in her long struggle for economic fairness, quality education and health care for all, and social justice. None of which came to pass, of course. If I sound cynical, ponder this: Shirley Chisholm may have opened doors for black women in this country, but then that only led to Condolezza Rice!
Not a great legacy.
