I don't know who'll win today's New Hampshire Democratic presidential primary, but I know who'll win the primary on the Republican side . . . George W. Bush.
This is a shame, because there are Republican candidates challenging Bush for the nomination who just aren't getting much attention from the press, somehow suggesting that Bush is invincible. The best-known (if he can be called that) Republican challenger to Bush is Blake Ashby, a St. Louis businessman and a moderate Republican who believes that Bush is mortgaging America's future with his tax cuts and is spending way too much of the tax money Washington does receive. (My local paper did include an article on Ashby - on page 46, where no one noticed!)
Ashby is impassioned, he is devoted, and he's going to lose, of course, but he may be on to something - conservatives and moderates in the Republican party are increasingly disgruntled with Bush's spending plans and his amnesty program for immigrants, among other things. If the Democrats can pick a candidate who will appeal to moderate Republicans and independents as well as hardcore Democratic voters, and if enough conservatives stay home on November 2, Bush will be in trouble. Go here for more information about the Ashby campaign.
(P.S. A Newsweek poll just out shows John Kerry ahead of Bush in a hypothetical matchup by three percentage points. Go, Johnny, go - go! :-D)
