And This Is The Way It Is

I saw Walter Cronkite - yes, that Walter Cronkite - at a lecture at New Jersey's Drew University, hosted by Drew president and former New Jersey governor Tom Kean. Needless to say, Mr. Cronkite's talk turned to the impending war with Iraq, and he finds it utterly irresponsible for Dub the Shrub to go ahead and lead the United States into a war in the Middle East. The conflict, Mr. Cronkite maintained, could cost an extraordinarily large amount of money, bankrupt the government, and deny crucial funding to domestic concerns. He added that we could have runaway inflation even worse than what we saw back in the seventies. Furthermore, Mr. Cronkite said, this war could poison relations with longtime U.S. allies for years to come.
It's too bad that today's broadcast "journalists" aren't as direct and honest as Walter Cronkite, the most trusted man in America.
Mr. Cronkite, however, did offer a reason for hope to appear in the Pandora's box Dub is opening. He said that Americans have been through dark times before -- the Civil War, the Depression -- and we've always risen to the occasion and carried on as a nation. And we've gotten through it all. Therefore, we can do it again.
Yes, we have the ability to get through this. Will we? We shall see.
