Recently Amy Walter pointed out that no Democratic presidential candidate has won a third straight election for the party since 1836, unless you count Franklin Roosevelt in 1940 - which Walter doesn't. In 1836, the Democrats' opposition was the Whig Party, the Whigs nominated four presidential candidates from different regions of the country as part of a strategy to throw the election into the House (instead, the vice presidential election was thrown into the Senate, the only time that's ever happened), and the big issues were states' rights and recognizing Texas independence.
The winning Democratic candidate was named Martin . . . Martin Van Buren.
To lock in President Obama's achievements, the Democrats need to win a third straight presidential election in 2016. Time to call on another Martin - Martin O'Malley - to do it again! :-)
