What a Game!

The national men's soccer team of Germany came out on top yesterday to win the World Cup.  They deserve it.  They got through a difficult period of group play early in the tournament, and once in the round of sixteen, fought their way through to make the semifinals.  Their match with Brazil was where the Brazilians met their match, the Germans winning 7-1 in one of the most lopsided soccer victories that I personally can remember.  But the Germans knew the Argentines wouldn't be such pushovers, and they weren't; after two scoreless halves, with Argentina dominating the ball and going on the attack often, Germany added more grit, persistence, and patience before Mario Götze finally scored the winning - the game's only - goal for Germany late in extra time.  This victory marks Germany's first World Cup since the summer of 1990 and their first win since reunification in the fall of 1990.  It's also the first time a European team has won the World Cup in a Cup tournament played in the Americas.  My Volkswagen cap is off to them. :-)
On to Russia in 2018 . . .
