The four-man bobsled runs took an unforeseen turn after two heats. Although the U.S. team led by Steven Holcomb is still in the running after two heats and in fourth place, the Russian team led by Alexander Zubkov has the lead, with Zubkov hoping to become only the sixth driver to win two bobsled gold medals in the same Winter Olympics.
But standing in the way of his dream is Team 1 from . . . Latvia! :-D Yes, Latvia-1, piloted by Oskars Melbardis, came on strong to place a close second behind Zubkov's Russian team after a fast second run. The last two runs take place tomorrow.
I hope Holcomb wins a medal, possibly another gold - he is the defending Olympic champion four-man boblsed driver from Vancouver, after all - but I also hope to see Oskars Melbardis and his merry Latvians win a medal. And wouldn't it be sweet for them to deny Zubkov and his crew a medal, just to get back at the Russians on Russian soil for 51 years of an illegal occupation and annexation of their homeland?
They'd do Janis Kipurs proud! :-D
On a more serious note, Canada-3 crashed on the track, which shook up a lot of racers and which Zubkov blamed for spooking him. Arrogance run amok. I'm pleased to report that the Canadians were not injured.
