I thought we'd been spared the worst when Tropical Storm Andrea turned out to be no big deal for New Jersey, but it may have set the stage for far worse weather tomorrow. Northern New Jersey is supposed to get another round of heavy, unstoppable rain, and the ground is so heavily saturated from Andrea and other bouts of rain we've had since then that flooding is possible. While I live in a high-ground neighborhood, getting around the area as I have to tomorrow might be treacherous, especially if streets are turned into canals.
Did I happen to mention the wind and lightning possible? Although southern New Jersey is expected to bear the brunt of this storm - which could cause another huge derecho across the Midwest and the Middle Atlantic region like the one that occurred in June 2012 - and although the chance of severe weather is officially "slight" where I live, that doesn't mean a major thunderstorm - with 60-mph winds, cloud-to-ground lightning, and hail - can't be ruled out in my neck of the woods. And any such storm could topple a tree - maybe one of ours - and destroy a row of power lines - maybe along my street.
We've already had a tree toppled onto our semi-detached garage, and we've seen the power lines right along our front yard decimated, each incident in a different storm, so what are the chances of anything like that - including a blackout - happen again? What were the chances of two major storms hitting us on the same day - say, October 29 - within a year of each other?
Stay tuned. I may be back.
And maybe I'll stop encasing so many clauses in hyphens.
