The United States and Canada are playing each other in men's hockey right now, and I keep hearing about each of these players coming from different National Hockey League teams. Call me a traditionalist, call me a curmudgeon if you will, but I pine for the days when NHL professionals didn't play for national teams. After all, it wasn't crack professionals that made up the gold medal-winning 1980 U.S. "Miracle On Ice" hockey team, but a bunch of students who played for their country and not necessarily their egos.
Never mind the fact the Cold War is over, it doesn't matter as much if the U.S beats the Russians when you have players on each team who might happen to play on the same NHL squad.
