It seems that the only way Newark, New Jersey can get into the national news these days is for a heinous triple murder like the one that took place last weekend to happen. The crimes have scared the hell out of New Jersey's largest city, and they have underscored just how difficult it is for Mayor Booker to turn the city around. But bear in mind that while Newark has come a long way in forty years, it has many times as long to go before it can achieve a passable quality of life. Even if Booker serves twenty years as mayor and has a relatively successful term of office, he will leave Newark only a marginally better city when he leaves city hall.
This crime has made a twin mockery of George W. Bush's policies. Promising to keep America safe from terrorists, he can't keep our cities safe from the thugs who terrorize them. Plus, the likely guilty suspect in custody for killing the three incoming Delaware State University freshman students and wounding a fourth person is an illegal immigrant, and Bush can't seem to get a hold on the immigration issue either.
