The ladies' figure skating competition is underway, at long last. They always save it for last because it's easily the most popular event in the Witner Olympics. Why? No one wants to admit it, but it's been said that this is the closest you can come to featuring sex in the Winter Olympics.
Whoever said that obviously never saw German speed skater Anni Friesinger! :-D
Much attention is being placed on Sasha Cohen to see if she can win yet another gold for the U.S. To give you some perspective of the stakes here, American women have the gold medal in solo figure skating in three out of every four winter Olympiads since 1988, the exception being 1994 when the gold medal went to Ukrainian Oksana Baiul. By contrast, no American man has won the gold medal in solo figure skating since Brian Boitano won it in 1988.
In women's figure skating, Katarina Witt - the 1984 and 1988 champion - is the only woman to win gold twice in the past forty years.
