Benjamin Franklin

Today we mark - nay, celebrate - the three hundredth anniversary of the birth of a truly great American, Benjamin Franklin. Scientist, journalist, statesman, diplomat, philosopher, humorist - Benjamin Franklin was all of these and more. He was a brilliant thinker and a curious, inquisitive person who devoted his entire life to the betterment of humankind. The very ideas of liberty and democratic government as we know them would have been inconceivable without him. Ironically, though Franklin was very much a contemporary man who could easily adapt to these times, we have no one even remotely like him - when, right now, we especially need someone of his caliber.
