And now for my daily dose of Alito-bashing. . . . The selection of Samuel Alito has dismayed many people who see him as just another white man on the highest of court of an increasingly multiracial, multiethnic nation. They believe that Alito's background doesn't offer enough diversity on the Supreme Court. Au contraire: West Caldwell, New Jersey, Alito's (and my) hometown, is tremendously diverse. It is populated by Americans of Irish, Italian, Jewish, Polish, and German background, many of whom came here with a common objective - to get the hell out of Newark to get away from black people! :-O
