One returning swimmer who could make a big splash in the women's events - and if she's reading this, I hope she forgives me for those awful puns - is Amanda Beard. Beard, currently attending Arizona State University, is a two-time Olympian who won the hearts of American fans at Atlanta in 1996 with a powerful breaststroke style that enabled her to go through water like a rototiller through dirt. She already as a gold medal and two silver ones from Atlanta and Sydney, and if she makes the U.S. team for Athens, she could have some of her best races ahead of her.
Beard has also been in the news recently for what she's been doing optside the pool; she's been romantically linked to Australian swimming champion Ian Thorpe.
She knows how to pick 'em! :-D
