It looks like Michael Phelps is going to be the man to beat in Athens at the swimming meets. He breezed through his most recent trial runs, although his trials for the most important events are still to come this weekend. Natalie Coughlin - who looked to be the Mary Decker Slaney of swimming due to her heartbreaking disappointments - made it into the U.S. Olympic team with her performance in the women's 100-meter backstroke. On the men's side, Lenny Krazelburg, who won three gold medals in Sydney but has had surgery and poor performances since then - eked out a place on the Olympic team against the odds. Go Lenny!
Amanda Beard - and her teddy bear - will be going to Athens, thanks to her performance in the 100-meter breaststroke, her signature event. By the way, have you seen the Beard Lady recently? Once a spunky teenager in Atlanta and Sydney, she's 22 and all grown up - and she looks gorgeous!
All I can say to Ian Thorpe is, "Dude!"
At 31, Jenny Thompson will be back on the Olympic team, but the victory is bittersweet. Her mother died of cancer five months ago.
