Donald Trump filed suit to prevent his January 6 trial, saying that he, as President of the United States on January 6, 2021, was discharging his duties on the day of the insurrection an is immune from any crimes he "may have" committed.
At the hearing today his lawyer was asked by the three-judge panel if the government was able to prosecute a former President for any crimes he had committed while in office - including, theoretically, if he sicced the Navy SEALs on a political rival and had that rival assassinated. The lawyer - who shall remain anonymous to protect the stupid - said that his legal immunity means that it would only be acceptable to prosecute him if he had been impeached and convicted by both houses of Congress.
In other words, Trump could shoot Joe Biden on Fifth Avenue and not only not lose any votes, he would not have to go to jail for it.
And if Trump is President again, his opponents will go to jail for . . . being opponents of him.
Happy new year, folks. It's going to get worse before it gets even worse.
On the other hand, Trump's effort to get the 1/6 case thrown out of court will definitely fail.
