Wes Moore becomes governor of Maryland today.
He takes office as the state's first black governor and the state's 63rd governor overall.
Described by the state's previous Democratic governor, Martin O'Malley (who turns sixty today), as the best communicator in the Maryland state Democratic Party in generations, Moore is setting out to improve equity and fairness in the Old Line State with progressive initiatives on everything from education reform to public transportation. He has been a philanthropist and a television producer who has championed anti-poverty activities and access to higher education, as well as an author and a veteran of the Afghanistan War. In short, he's a much cooler guy than outgoing Republican governor Larry Hogan.
Some observers may scoff at Moore's resume, citing his lack of government experience (as if his sixteen years in the military didn't count toward public service). But Ohio's new U.S. Senator James David Vance is a venture capitalist and author with no government experience either, yet somehow his lack of experience is considered a plus - even if his right-wing positions on the issues are so hideously insufferable and bone-headed. (This guy beat Tim Ryan?) Moore's experience is as a leader in the private sector who knows what's right and what's fair. With his desire to make his home state a better place and his past efforts toward the goal of making things better for everyone, he will not only be a successful governor, he could very well be a possibility for an elected executive position that oversees more than one state. 😉
