In the past week, Kazakhstan, a former Soviet republic, has been rocked by protests against rising fuel prices and corruption in the government.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev cracked down on protests using brute force, and he shut down the Internet in the country. Former Soviet republics in a security arrangement with Kazakhstan, including Russia, moved troops in to help Tokayev restore order after he extended fuel price caps for six months.
Conclusion?
Maybe Kazakhstan isn't in good enough shape to host the Winter Olympics after all.
Sorry, Borat.
