Remember when I bitched about the revival of Cats that opened on Broadway in July 2016? I'm happy to report that the theatrical abomination that lasted on Broadway for eighteen years in its original U.S. run will have lasted only eighteen months as revival. It's scheduled to close the day before New Year's Eve.
What happened that caused the Cats revival to come up short in staying power? Simple, really - there may be a sucker born every minute, but so many of those suckers fell for Cats back in the eighties and nineties that there weren't many left to fall for this scam.
Well, not among theatergoers or tourists in New York, anyway. A new tour production - produced by Cirque de Soleil - is scheduled to follow the close of the revival, and there's even going to be a film version of it coming out!
There's been a television version as well. It was like Kiss Meets the Phantom Of the Park, only the makeup and the music weren't as good. :-p
Stop further development of this musical. We gotta get it out of our memory. ;-)
