Michelle Obama's supposedly anti-American comments have now been forgotten in the wake of the even bigger story surrounding John McCain. The New York Times reported today that McCain had meetings with a female lobbyist that might at least have been an improper business relationship and at worst might have been an improper romantic relationship. McCain, in a swift and thorough attempt at damage control, denied the charges in a morning news conference today and took every single question posed to him. The living statue positioned next to him - that would be his wife Cindy - took a moment to declare that she doesn't believe the story. (Hey, if the right can bash Mrs. Obama, then Mrs. McCain is fair game.)
Right now, conservative commentators are bashing the New York Times for doing a hit job on McCain, and they may be onto something here. The Times used mostly anonymous sources, with little in the way of hard evidence. It was the Times, after all, that took a story about Rudolph Giuliani paying for security expenses for his then-girlfriend and blew it out of proportion. Alas, Giuliani's campaign collapsed anyway. (Thanks, Times editorial board!:-D)
As for the Democrats, this probably helps Obama more because he looks even more uncorruptable by contrast. It doesn't look as good Hillary Clinton, who's had to deal with corruption charges of her own. In fact, so much attention is being focused on McCain right now that Hillary's efforts at a comeback in the primaries are going to be pretty much ignored! :-D
