Changes In Washington

The Montana Senate contest having already been decided in favor of Democrat Jon Tester, Virginia Republican senator George Allen conceded defeat to Democrat Jim Webb. Do you know what this means?
Virginians now have two former Navy Secretaries representing them in the Senate!
Oh yeah, and it also means the Democrats control the Senate (which I thought would not happen!) as well as the House. I'm not really a big fan of the Democrats - they keep avoiding issues like gun control and mass transit, things that would define them more clearly if they supported them - but the Democratic Party has its virtues, the main one being it's not the Republican Party. It remains to be seen whether the Democrats, with their new congressional majorities, can deliver on health care and better jobs, or whether this is a temporary upward blip in a downward trend. But in the meantime, I'm satisfied.
I even got a job right after the Republicans were voted out of power. See, things are looking up already!
Meanwhile, Donald Rumsfeld is out as Secretary of Defense. Good riddance. He should have resigned the moment the war in Iraq went sour, which was right after Saddam Hussein was toppled. Robert Gates promises to be a more competent Defense Secretary, but Iraq may be too far gone for anyone at the Pentagon to rectify. :-O
