Word among Republicans and Democrats alike in Washington is that the midterm elections in November are headed for a blowout to put the Democrats in power. Republican candidates are trying to strike a balance between maintaining some distance between George W. Bush and keeping a united front regarding Iraq, because they generally agree that the United States just can't bug out. Democrats, who are coming around to the fact that the war was a mistake from the start, have an advantage here, but they still haven't figured out what to do about it if they take back Congress. Neither party really has the confidence of the voters, though, and if there were a strong, moderate third party, that's the party that would be well aheaad in the polls now.
