The Sitcom Is Dying

The television ratings for the week ending, Sunday, April 24 show a disturbing and discouraging thread for anyone who likes sitcoms. Of the twenty most popular shows that week, only two were situation comedies; one was "Everybody Loves Raymond," which is ending its run this season after nine years on the air, and the other was "Two and a Half Men," which, in a word, sucks.
Given the continuing trend toward reality shows, the sitcom genre is likely to remain in the doldrums for some time to come. Reality shows, however, are to television what SUV's are to the auto industry; the broadcast networks have relied on them so long for easy profits that, when the bottom falls out, there won't be any other way to attract people. And they're already losing viewers left and right to basic cable. And exactly how much of "Survivor" or "American Idol" can anyone take?
Then again . . . :-O
