God Bless The Child?

I became sick and disgusted with this bit of news I heard on the radio today.
A new report shows that the United States ranks twenty-fifth in controlling infant mortality, as well as thirty-third in controlling preschooler (children aged five and under) mortality. The report, which showed other Western nations far ahead of us in their ability to keep babies - the world's most vulnerable and helpless inhabitants - alive, blamed the U.S.'s abysmal showing partly on the economic inequities that have allowed our wealthiest citizens to control nearly half of the nation's wealth. The report also concluded that nowhere in the Western world is there a greater gap between the rich and the middle and lower classes than the United States.
I don't want to hear anyone in America brag about us being number one again until we get a handle on our infant and preschooler mortality problem. Alas, we seem to be as good at keeping our children healthy and safe as we are at keeping Islamic extremist commandos from hijacking jet airliners. :-(
