Iran Rigs the Vote

An article in today's Star-Ledger reported on how Iran's religious leaders, who have the final say in everything, purged hundreds of reformists and liberals from the ballots in upcoming national elections, including eighty incumbent members of Parliament. Although President Mohamed Khatami is trying to loosen hardline conservative control over Iranian life, the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, wants to maintain the purity of the Islamic revolution and is therefore resisting further democratic reform.
So, what Khamenei essentially did was to tell the reformist opposition that their opinions don't matter and that they should just put up or shut up. Hmmm, that's pretty much the way the Republicans are running the House of Representatives here! :-(
