Will this year's Cinco de Mayo celebrations involve more Americans of non-Mexican descent, seeing as the holiday commemorates a defeat of the French army at the Battle of Puebla and Francophobia is all the rage here right now? Well, I'm not going to celebrate Cinco de Mayo because, as I said before, it's an insult to the Mexican people and to Mexican-Americans to use their holiday as an excuse to gorge on burritos and Dos Equis beer. However, if you non-Chicanos out there insist on celebrating the day and plan to bring records to the party, bring records from Ritchie Valens, Santana, and Los Lobos. Do not embarrass yourself by bringing titles from Jose Feliciano and Tito Puente (Puerto Rican Day is next month!).
Okay, I guess Santana's cover of Puente's "Oye Como Va" is acceptable. (For the record, "Oye Como Va" is Spanish for "Hear How it Goes.")
