Alright, I just saw My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and I must say, it was an enjoyable flick! There were a couple of dead spots, mostly in the form of scenes that needed a little more dialogue, but overall, I liked it very much. Nia Vardalos's original concept holds up better as a 90-minute movie than as a situation comedy repeated week after week. The ending was a little flat, especially as it came after a rather festive wedding reception scene (and I hope I didn't give away too much there), but that was no big deal.
In any case, I can see why My Big Fat Greek Wedding was the surprise hit of 2002; I'm not Greek (though my surname, ending with -is, has led a couple of people to believe otherwise), but I still saw a part of my family in all of the ethnic escapades. And if you come from from a WASP family, you'll still relate to the groom (played by John Corbett) and his parents. As for the sitcom, well . . .. I took a chance on one more episode, and it was better than the first four, but it still has a long way to go.
Funniest joke in the movie -- the family patriarch using Windex to cure any malady.
