Last-Ditch Effort For Peace

Interesting column from Molly Ivins in yesterday's paper - after laying out an irrefutable argument for avoiding war with Iraq, she urges her readers to write to our House and Senate representatives to stop the conflict before it starts. Er, I don't think so, Molly. I mean, I oppose this possible war too, but writing my congressman isn't going to stop it. My congressman happens to be a Republican - he's socially moderate, but on foreign policy, he backs Dub the Shrub 100 percent - especially regarding the Middle East! Ditto Frank Lautenberg in the Senate, even though he's a Democrat.
Senator Jon Corzine, also a Democrat, opposes a strike against Saddam Hussein, and he voted against giving the White House the authority to carry one out, but he was clearly in the minority on that one - in the Senate. Outside Washington, however, opposition to the military buildup in the Persian Gulf is building. Is it enough to stop Bush from doing something stupid enough to make the Vietnam War look like a stroke of genius? Let's hope so.
