Rebecca of Donnybrook Farms

She's a former Navy pilot and has had a successful civilian career, she's from New Jersey, and her name is Rebecca.

No, I'm not talking about Mikie Sherrill, whose given name is Rebecca ("Mikie" comes from her middle name, Michelle).  I'm talking about Rebecca Bennett, a businesswoman and a military veteran who, like the governor of New Jersey, is running for a U.S. House seat.

Bennett has the same safe, moderate, slightly liberal agenda that Sherrill got herself elected to the House with in 2018,  with emphasis on affordability and health care accessibility.  She's currently running strong in New Jersey's Seventh U.S. House district, but her victory is hardly assured.  Her Republican opponent is incumbent Representative Tom Kean, Jr., son of the former New Jersey governor from the 1980s, and blessed with the name of one of the Garden State's most historically prominent families.  He has also has Bennett's weaknesses going for him.  Bennett has worked in the health care industry, and this is a time when being a health care executive is about as popular as being a pork butcher in Jerusalem.

But Kean doesn't have that much else going for him.  Quite the opposite: He has a lot going against him.  He spent over a hundred days out of his House seat - being treated for depression, or so he says - and he traded stocks as a House member despite having supported a ban on such activity.  And Bennett knows how to throw a punch.

I haven't seen any polls for the district, but it looks to be an interesting election heading into Tuesday.  At this point, who will win is anybody's guess.  But it will be par for the course if Bennett wins.  New Jerseyans obviously have a thing for sending female Naval Air veterans to elective office. 😊
