Larry Elder could be elected governor of California one week from today, if incumbent governor Gavin Newsom is recalled.  Elder opposes the minimum wage, sneers at COVID restrictions, denies climate change, and would replace ailing Democratic U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein with a Republican even nuttier than he is, costing U.S. Senate Democrats their majority. 

And he could still win.  I'm not saying Elder will win, only that he could win.  And I said the same thing about Donald Trump's presidential bid in 2016.  Although the polls show Newsom comfortably ahead on the recall issue, polls have been notoriously unreliable in many elections, and the fact that this is a September election in an odd-numbered off year could skew the results of the polls as well.  Democrats in California are voting by mail, while Republicans could vote in person on September 14, and - fueled by hatred for all things the emanate from the Democratic Party - could tip the balance in Elder's favor.

And, if Newsom is recalled, Elder will be governor of a liberal state with just 25 percent of the vote.  Maybe 27.
