This may be an inside joke, seeing as he played a minister who married a couple in what turned out to be the series finale of the one-season wonder "Better With You," which ABC subsequently killed, but the indomitable Edward Herrmann played another clergyman in this past week's episode of "How I Met Your Mother" who refuses to marry Barney and Robin for trying to cover up their sordid pasts and how said pasts led to their engagement. Then Barney and Robin subsequently, but inadvertently, kill him. When they make their case for their wedding to Herrmann's character and go through their said sordid pasts, their outrageous stories shock him to death. Literally - he dies! Just like "Better With You." At least "How I Met Your Mother" is going out on its own terms.
Meanwhile, Ted gets hooked up with the worst possible girl at the pre-wedding parties, and every attempt he makes to get out of it backfires miserably. He's given up on love (he hasn't met the future Mrs. Mosby at this point), and he's probably ready to give up on one-night stands. Marshall, on the way to wedding and probably in Indiana by now, is figuring out how to explain to Lily his acceptance of a judgeship that will derail their plans to move to Italy, but his traveling companion Daphne somehow lets Lily know. His cell phone rings. To be continued.
Aside from Marshall and Lily's plans, we pretty much know how this show is going to turn out. We just don't know how we're going to get there. ;-)
